Shock sensitivity of attractive nitramines incorporated into a polyisobutylene matrix
Plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) from the two sorts of ε-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL20) and from 1,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazinane (RDX), 3-1,3,4,7-tetranitro-l,3,5,7-tetrazocane (β-HMX) and cis1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-4,5-dimidazole (bicyclo-HMX, BCHMX) were prepared using a polyisobutylene binder with a dioctylsebacate plasticizer (DOS), i.e.a C4 matrix. One version of CL20 is a product with reduced sensitivity (RS-CL20).All these PBXs, referenced as RS-CL20-C4, CL20-C4, RDX-C4, HMX-C4 and BCHMX-C4, were tested by using the Small Scale Gap Test according to STANAG 4488 and, in the ease of CL20 fillers, also by differential thermal analysis (DTA).Results of the gap test on PBXs with RDX, 1β--HMX and BCHMX correspond to the impact sensitivities of the original crystalline nitramines. It is not completely valid for ε-CL20 whose morphological stability in the C4 matrix is not good.In other words PBXs with RS-CL20 cannot achieve as high a shock sensitivity as would be expected fiom the difference in impact sensitivities between RDX, β-HMX and BCHMX, on the one hand, and RS-CL20 on the other.
