Initiation of explosive by laser driven flyer plate
Experimental Initiation of Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate (PETN) and Hexanitrostilbene-Ⅳ(HNS-Ⅳ) explosives by laser driven flyer plate was discussed.By using a optimum selection of 5 μ m Al flyer and φ 0.5 × 0.3 metal barrier, the explosive samples of about Ⅰ μ m mean grain size and 90% theoretical maximum density(TMD) in a metal case were detonated successfully. The PETN had a much lower critical firing laser energy than HNS-Ⅳ, which in accordance with the electrical slapper exploding practices. The much lower critical firing laser energy of the explosives made it possible for safe transmission of laser by a fiber optic line, and in turn made it possible for the use of optical detonation technique in multipoint synchronous initiation of warheads.
