Study of soil microstructure using computer analysis of SEM-images

  The paper describes a new system for quantitative analysis of soil microstructureSTIMAN-3D software, based on unique methods of SEM-images processing and analysis.Apart from basic morphological parameters of microstructure.STIMAN-3D enables obtaining integral classification characteristics, degree of structural dements orientation, pore channel tortuosity index, specific surface and permeability, etc.The software allows investigation of polydisperse and heterogeneous microstruc tures, as well as large-area analysis by panoramic images.The module of volumetric stereometric analysis aims to carry out 3D reconstruction of surface micrordief, obtaining height microrelief data with con sequent calculation of various statistical volumetric characteristics of soils microstructure.Due to fully automated process of morphological image analysis, as well as because of wide range of parameters can be calculated, STIMAN-3D enables obtaining complete quantitative information about soil microstruc ture by small sample in a short period.Using this information one can explain properties and behavior of soils under the various conditions.
