Rampant corruption is often observed in resource-rich countries, especially developing countries with weak political institutions.Do natural resources breed corruption? And if so, how? This study addresses these questions by investigating the impacts of resource abundance on the occurrence of corruption in China.By examining resource-related corruption cases in China, it identifies several channel sthrough which resources give rise to corruption. Moreover, through a cross-regional and longitudinal data analysis of eorruption rates in Chinese provinces, it finds that the abundance of and dependence on mineral resources do increase the propensity for corruption by local officials.
