Vulnerable Market and Technological Advancement:Why did Great Britain fail in the Late Nineteenth Century?

During the first era of industrial revolution, Britain took the lead in technology and became the workshop of the world. However, in the hte nineteenth century, Germany and United States upgraded their industries while Great Britain was falling behind. Why did Great Britain fail in responding to new technological challenge? This paper tries to demonstrate that international market extent is more vulnerable than domestic one.Domestic incentives are embedded in broader international power structure.British industries relied heavily on large and expanding overseas markets. The loss of these markets to rising competitors therefore weakened the incentives of domestic manufacturers and financiers and accounted for Great Britains failure in technological upgrading.By contrast, the greater domestic market extent encouraged United States to sustain technological progress in industrial sector.
