Aerodynamic Measurements on a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine in a Laboratory Wind Tunnel

A scaled fixed-pich variable speed horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) model which is designed for non-gridconnected wind power system was experimentally studied. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory wind tunnel. With pressure acquisition system and a five-hole probe, details about flow fields in the near wake of the turbine blade were obtained. The result shows that, for a fixed-pich variable speed HAWT,the measured tangential velocity is almost negative, which means in wake area the direction of flow is counterclockwise to the rotor rotation direction. When at ? ? 4.48,the radial velocity does not change a a lot at different radial positions. And along the downstream direction, the radial velocity decreases. However when ? ?10.04 the radial velocity is increasing along the radial direction, especially at the blade tip area.
