A multi-scale framework of the river ecosystem structure

The structure of river ecosystems is the guide rule of the permutation and combination pattern both in spatial and temporal scales for components in the ecosystem. Considering the diversity and complexity of abiotic environmental factors and biological components in river ecosystems, the analytic hierarchy process method was employed to investigate the components of the river ecosystem structure and its key influencing factors from the perspective of spatial and temporal scales. A multi-scale framework of the river ecosystem structure based on the hydrological and hydraulic characteristics was proposed. The river ecosystem structure is a hierarchical nested structure constituted by the macroscale, mesoscale and microscale components. A smaller-scale structure is constrained in a larger-scale one. Among the compositions of the river ecosystem structure, the time structure runs through the formation and evolution processes of the other structures. The results provide a basis for evaluation of functions of river ecosystems, restoration and protection of river ecosystems, and offer a reference for the development and utilization of water resources in rivers and watershed management.
