Study on the distribution adjustment mechanism of invertebrates in the riparian zone under the condition of altered water level - a case study of snails

The riparian zone is an important habitat for aquatic organisms, and the invertebrates‘ distribution in the riparian zone is sensitive to the variation of river water level. As a typical invertebrate in the riparian zone, the snail is selected to study its distribution adjustment mechanism under the condition of altered river water level. Based on the theoretical analysis, a generalizability process of snail distribution adjustment is proposed, and a calculation method is developed for predicting the theoretical distribution elevation of snails under the altered water level. The calculation method reveals that: (1) the snail distribution elevation increases with the rising of water level, and decreases with the declining of the water level; (2) the relative altitude between the snail distribution elevation and the water level presents a decreasing tendency with the rising of water level, and an increasing tendency with the declining of the water level. The field measure data of water levels and snails distribution elevation are collected and analyzed at the Chenglingji station of Dongting Lake during 2008 to 2010. The analysis result shows that the adjustment regulations of snail distribution elevation are consistent with the conclusions above. The study in this paper is helpful to reveal the distribution adjustment mechanism of invertebrates in the riparian zone responding the variation of hydrological conditions, and promote the discipline development of eco-hydrology.
