One-dimensional habitat suitability simulation of Chinese sturgeon spawning grounds in the downstream of Gezhouba Dam based on fuzzy logic method

Because of the impoundment of the Three Gorges reservoir, the flow regime of the downstream of Gezhouba Dam has changed significantly. The Chinese sturgeon spawning actions are closely depending on the hydrological process. The habitat suitability model of Chinese sturgeon(Acipenser sinensis Gray) spawning grounds in the downstream of Gezhouba Dam was established based on fuzzy logic method, with selecting depth, velocity and substrate as environmental indexes. Fuzzy sets of depth, velocity and substrate were established, fuzzy rules were obtained. Habitat suitability of Chinese sturgeon in Gezhouba spawning sites and its space distribution map at different discharges(4000m3/s, 9000m3/s, 20000m3/s, 40000m3/s) were simulated by CASiMiR. The results indicated that Chinese sturgeon requires a high spawning condition, the discharge between about 9000m3/s and 30000m3/s is suitable for Chinese sturgeon spawning, a condition with appropriate velocity and suitable water depth is beneficial to Chinese sturgeon spawning and breeding. The research of the habitat for Chinese sturgeon spawning has been important for the protection of the natural populations of Chinese sturgeon. The relationship between discharge and weighted useable area(WUA) has also been a reference for the determination of ecological flow in the downstream of Gezhouba Dam.
