Landscape Predictors of River Water Quality in Xitiaoxi basin, China
Xitiaoxi is one of the most important watershed in the Taihu Basin of China. The dataset was obtained during the period 2003-2007 from the Environmental Protection Agency of ANJI County, consisted of five physicochemical variables at 20 sampling sites in the Xitiaoxi basin. Landscape characterized by surficial geology, land-use pattern and four selected landscape metrics including Number of Patches (NP), Edge Density (ED), Contagion (CONT), Shannon‘s Diversity Index (SHDI) were obtained, using FRAGSTATS tool. Spearman correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used to determine whether there was a correlation between water quality and landscape. Catchment and 200m buffer zones influence on water quality over two time periods (dry season and wet season) were compared. Some conclusions of this paper were drawn as follows: (1) Water quality is associated with the land use, surficial geology and landscape configuration. In general, urban was negative with water quality, while forest and slope were positive with water quality. Farmland, ED, SHDI were negatively and CONT was positively related to water quality in catchment. But in buffer zone, farmland, ED, SHDI and CONT didn‘t show obvious relationship with water quality. (2) In general, the 200m buffer zone landscape characteristics appeared to have greater influence on water than catchment. The water quality was much better explained in wet season than in dry season. (3) The water quality varied greatly in space and time. NH4+-N varied spatially and seasonally. DO varied significantly only with season, while BOD5 showed considerable spatial variability only among the wet season. CODMn and TP varied significantly among catchments but only had slightly significant variability during the seasons. This study suggests that riparian buffer played a crucial role in water quality management, especially the non-point source pollution control in the Xitiaoxi watershed.
