A method to assess the effects of water level fluctuation on reservoir ecosystem

  In order to assess the effects of the water level fluctuation on the reservoir ecosystem, a water level fluctuation indicator (AFD) was proposed. The indicator, expressed as the monthly sum of daily step absolute of water level difference, was applied in the Danjiangkou Reservoir which is the source reservoir of Chinas South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project. The main results were as follows: 1) The Danjiangkou Reservoir was a reservoir with water level fluctuated greatly; 2) 2 0rder polynomial fit between the AFD and the density of phytoplankton and blue-green algae showed that the two Adj. R-Squa were 0.50216 and 0.7745, respectively. Those suggested that the AFD value is a good indicator of algae density. From the fit curves, it was proposed that the AFD value in the Danjiangkou Reservoir should be 10 m when it want to be a reservoir with more productivity and lower density of harmful algae; 3) the correlation analysis and regression analysis showed that there was a weak relationship between AFD and water quality in Danjiangkou Reservoir. The reasons may be owed to aspects, one is the water level fluctuate at lowest AFD value of 0.77m may had greatly disturbed the littoral bottom in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the other is the water quality just be monitored at the top layer(<lm) of the reservoir. The potential effects of water level fluctuation on reservoir ecosystem were discussed. It is strongly suggested that the water quality should be monitored at multi-water-layers in the Danjiangkou Reservoir and the effects of water level fluctuation on the reservoir ecosystem should be valued and the related researches are of great urgency to be carried out.
