USING SIMPLE RULES TO BUILD THE BUSINESS MODEL:THE CASE OF QIHOO 360
The innovation of business models has profoundly reshaped many industries, especially new industries like e-businesses.It has also become the subject of a growing number of academic studies. However, little research has investigated this important question: how does the entrepreneurial firm develop its business model? In this study,we analyze the free business model of Qihoo 360,an emerging Internet giant in China.Qihoo 360 is a company that took just 6 years to become a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange with a market value of about US$2.68 billion. We ask three questions related to the business model concept: How did Qihoo 360 develop its free business model? How did it use this free model to overpower its competitors? How has this model evolved over time? Through examining these questions in an in-depth case study,we develop a new framework of using simple rules to build the business model.
