Diffusion of the Aggressive Ions in the Crack of Concrete
The cracks have a great influence on the diffusion process of the aggressive ions in concrete structures. This paper presents a simulation research on the diffusion process of chloride ions and sulfate ions in a paral lel crack and a wedge-shaped crack in concrete.Firstly, the relationship between the crack width and the chloride diffusion coefficient in cracking concrete was statistically summarized from literature, and then the chloride diffusions along both the parallel and the wedge-shaped cracks were simulated.Considering the chemical reaction between sulfate and hydration products in concrete, the diffusion-reaction process of sulfate ions in both shapes of cracks was derived from the Ficks second law. Results show that the sulfate concen trations in cracks was lower than the chloride concentrations due to the consumption of sulfate ions in chemi cal reaction. The concentrations of chloride ions and sulfate ions in the wedge-shaped crack were lower than those in the parallel crack. It was found that the crack width and the crack shape play important roles in the diffusion process of aggressive ions.
