Effects of Additives on Crack Control and Mechanical Properties of Geopolymer Exposed to High Temperatures

Metakaolin (MK)-based geopolymers provide comparable mechanical properties as cement, but its main drawback is a tendency towards a large degree of drying shrinkage and cracking. To overcome this is sue, fly ash was partially substituted for metakaolin, and three types of additives, including carbon fibers, basalt fiber and styrene-acrylate emulsion were added into the formulation of geopolymer. The compressive strength and bending strength of geopolymer with different formulations were tested at ambient temperature. Also six groups of geopolymer specimens were heated on an alcohol oven to investigate the effects of these ad ditives on crack control. The results showed that the addition of a small amount of short carbon fiber can largely improve the bending strength but not remarkably reduce compressive strength of geopolymer at ambi ent temperature, also produce good effect on crack control.Consequently the compressive strength and ben ding strength of geopolymer with different contents of short carbon fibers were tested after elevated tempera ture exposure. And the cause of strength loss of carbon fiber reinforced geopolymer was analyzed.
