Numerical Investigation on Hot Spot Stress Concentration Factors of Welded Square Diamond Bird Beak T-joints under In-plane Bending
For the purpose to assess the fatigue in diamond bird beak T-joints, a finite element analysis (FEA),using the software Abaqus, was carried out. This work shows the effect of in plane bending on welded square (SHS) diamond bird beak T-joints.This FEA has been done in comparison with the experimental study in order to be able to check the modelling results. Thus, seven specimens of T-joints were designed with differ ent values of non-dimensional geometric parameters β, 2y and τ, parameters that will be defined later on.The hot spot stress concentration factor (SCF) distribution has been compared between the experiment and the FEA to validate the modelling build with Abaqus. The results of the finite element analysis are that under in plane bending the SCF is higher in the brace than in the chord no matter the values of non-dimensional geometric parameters β, 2y and τ and that the crown is where can be found the highest stress for all the models. From those results it can be concluded that squared hollow diamond bird beak T-joints have lower SCFs than basic T-joints therefore they have a longer fatigue life and have a better fatigue strength making it a bet ter joint in terms of fatigue assessment in structural designs.
