Vibration Characteristics and Aseismic Performances of Shen-wu Gate in the Forbidden City

To protect Chinese ancient buildings, Shen-wu Gate in the Forbidden City was taken as example to study its vibration characteristics and aseismic performances.Based on constitution characteristics, its finite element model was built.By modal analysis, its basic frequency and main modes were obtained. Then re sponse spectrums of 8-degree intensity of seldomly occurred earthquakes in level directions were applied to the model, its deformations as well as internal force distributions were studied. Results show that basic fre quency of Shen-wu Gate is 1.07 Hz, whose main vibration modes focus on 1 st, 2nd and 9th in x, z and y di rections with little correlation among each other; under 8-degree intensity of seldomly occurred earthquakes, its peak displacement and internal force values are within the permission scopes.
