Seismic Retrofitting of an Existing Building Using Steel-plate Dampers with Diamond Openings
A seismic retrofitting system is presented to upgrade the performance of seismically vulnerable RC and steel frame structures. The system is composed of chevron braces and hollow steel-plate dampers connected between the braces and the beams, and it is mounted within the bays of a building frame toreduce the seis mic demand of the structure. The proposed system was used in a six-story renovated building.Modeling ap proach for plastic hinges of structural members and dampers are discussed in details.Nonlinear time history analyses of the building in the original and retrofitted conditions were conducted for the prescribed high earthquake level to assess the efficiency of the system. The analytical results indicated that the proposed ret rofitting system can improve the global plastic hinge mechanism of the structures and experience significantly less damage and less residue deformation due to the energy dissipation through inelastic material behavior of the dampers.
