Vibration Characteristics of BFRP Cables for Long-span Cable-stayed Bridges
The vibration characteristics of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) cable in cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 1088 m were investigated by reduced scale dynamic test. The test was designed accord ing to similarity criteria referring to the prototype of the Su-tong Bridge. The vibration characteristics of BFRP and steel cable were obtained by free vibration decaying method. The natural frequency, modal damp ing ratios of BFRP cables were compared to those of steel cables. The results show that the primary natural frequency of BFRP cable is higher than the frequencies of primary modes of the bridge, which lowers the probability of cable-deck resonance. The results of modal damping ratios of the BFRP cable indicate that the damping properties of BFRP cable are superior than that of the steel cable, which makes the BFRP cable more advantages in enhancing the dynamic stability of the cable-stayed bridge.
