Flow Control for Vortex Induced Vibration of a Circular Cylinder Based on a Travelling Wave Wall

Numerical technique of travelling wave wall (TTW) method is used to suppressing vortex induced vi bration (VIV) of an elastically mounted circular cylinder with two degrees of freedom at a low Reynolds number of 200.The cross flow (CF) and the inline flow (IL) displacements, the centroid motion trajecto ries and the lift and drag forces of the cylinder that changed with the frequency ratios were analyzed in detail. The results show that TTw is very effective for suppressing VIV of the cylinder by eliminating the vortex shedding.A travelling wave wall can significantly suppress the CF and IL vibrations of the cylinder and can remarkably decrease the fluctuations of the lift coefficients and the average values of the drag coefficients;however, it will simultaneously dramatically increase the fluctuations of the drag coefficients.
