Microstructure characterization and flame retardant modifications of denim reinforced polypropylene composites

  A new kind of green composite had been fabricated by using the denim fabric to reinforce the polypropylene through heating press method.Tensile strength of denim reinforced polypropylene had been improved to 57MPa.In this study, ultrastructure of the composites had been observed; consequently the reinforcement effect of the denim fabric had been fully investigated.The morphology was investigated by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM).In addition, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of polypropylene is only 17.6% and that of denim is only 20.1% which indicate the flammable tendency of the composites.In this case, two methods were adopted to modify the combustibility property.Data showed that the limiting oxygen index had increased from 18.7% to 27.3%.Further research had been done to find out reasons for the modification results.
