Organics Fate in a MBR-NF System Treating Antibiotic Wastewater

A double membrane system combining membrane bioreactor (MBR) with nanofiltration membrane (NF) at pilot scale was installed and operated to treat real antibiotic wastewater for over three months at a pharmaceutical company in Wuxi (China). In the 1st stage, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of MBR was optimized to 30-36 h with better water quality comparing the local oxidation ditch plant (72h).In the 2nd stage, the NF was equipped following the MBR,and the water yield of NF reached over 925.6% through recycling the NF concentrate to the MBR tank. The pilot scale system operation in good conditions and obtained excellent water quality, which the concentration of TOC was stable at 5.52 mg/L.The MBR unit in MBR-NF system could match the level of conventional biological plants whereas the water yield was much higher.Organics analysis results showed that the main organics in biological effluent were proteins, fulvic acid-like and humic-like substances. These organics could be perfectly rejected by NF membrane but be accumulated in MBR unit due to recycling NF concentrate.
