Novel Electrochemical Detection Method Based on Lignin Modified Magnetic Microspheres for Ultrasensitive Detection Andremoval of Nitroaromatic Explosives from Water

A novel lignin modified hybrid microspheres, comprised of poly (styrene-co-acrylic acid) core and magnetite (Fe304)/Au nanoparticles (NPs) shell (L-MMS),were proposed here for the selective and highly sensitive detection and removal of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosives based on electrochemical detection methods. The hybrid material was fully characterized by SEM,TEM,XPS,and Raman Spectroscopy.Fe304 nanoparticles showed super paramagnetic properties required for efficient separation.A thin film of the conjugated material, after being exposed to TNT contaminated water samples and separated by a magnetic field, was deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).The selective sorption of TNT,within the sensing matrix resulted in unique reduction peaks which can be quantified by cyclic voltammetry (CV),deferential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and amperometric current-time (i-t) curves. The response to TNT is reversible and the sensor material is stable for months. The presence of lignin and the highly packed layer of Fe3(VAuNPs as a magnetic collector allowed for the detection of TNT below 1 pM.
