Solar Distillation Still Assisted by Solar Power Systems for Potable Water Production
Many cities are facing problem of drinking water shortage,particularly during dry periods.Sources of clean freshwater from lakes and rivers are limited.Alternatively brackish and saline water are used as feed water to water treat- ment plants.Expensive desalination process via reverse osmosis or distillation is used in the plants.This desalination pro- cess is beyond the reach of many poor countries.A cheaper method is by solar distillation.This paper presents an enhance- ment method of water production from solar distillation in tropical climate by using a combination of solar still and solar Photovoltaic --DC heater.The results were compared with theoretical production based on mathematical model of glass cover solar still.The finding of the present study indicates that the experimental results were higher than the numerical re- sults.Water production up t0 6.85 Liter per meter square per day was achieved.This finding is equivalent to the solar still production in areas with high solar radiation intensity.
