A Study on Comparing the Applicability of Infiltration Models Based on Soil Properties

The behavior and movement of water inside the soil are depending on several physical properties of soil such as texture, moisture content, specific gravity, saturation rate, etc. In the other hand, there are many analytic and experimental models to predicate the depth of water infiltration such as Philip,Kostiakov - Lewis,Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and Horton infiltration models. But for a specific soil, which model is the most effective one? For vartisol and non-vartisol types of soil which modeling is the best one and can describe the infiltration process better? In this regards, for 5 selected samples of non - vertisol and 5 selected samples of vertisol kinds of soil, the parameters of 4 common infiltration models,Kostiakov -Lewis,Horton,Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and Philip and their relation with soil properties has been studied in both high and low initial moist content. The root mean square error (RMSE),mean error (ME) and model efficiency (EF) was calculated as indicators for comparing applicability of these three models.Based on this study,it seems that Horton s model expresses the infiltration process better with less error in vertisol types however Kostiakov-Lewis model seems more effective in low initial moist content. The accuracy of Philip s model in infiltration process seems to be the least.
