Degradation of Phenol by Persulfate and Hydrogen Peroxide Activated by Zero-valent Iron

Sulfate radical and hydroxyl radical were activated from (NH4)2S208 and H202 by zero-valent iron, the concentration changes of the active species under different factors were detected by molecular probes (methanol and tert-butyl butanol). The results showed that the content of all the active species in the system tended to increase firstly and then decreased with the increase of zero-valent iron and H202 respectively; they increased with the increase of (NH4)2S208,and decreased with the increase of pH.The content of sulfate radicals tended to increase firstly and then decreased with the increase of zero-valent iron, and increased with the increase of (NH4)2S208 and decreased with the increase of H202 and pH.This findings of the study will provide a new way to activate persulfate for the degradation of environmental contaminants and a guide for the remediation of contaminated soil and water by persulfate.
