Coagulation Performance and Floe Properties of the Composite Coagulant During Surface Water Treatment

Polydimethyl diallylammonium chloride-polymeric ferric aluminum was synthesized by combing polydimethyl diallylammonium chloride (PDM) with polymeric ferric aluminum chloride (PFAC) with determined molecular weight ratio (Aluminum to PDMDAAC,Wr=l).Flocculating mechanisms and performance of the new composite coagulant were studied in treating surface water. The growth, breakage and regrowth of floes during coagulation were measured under optimal dosage and neutral conditions.Different shear forces were investigated to evaluate the floes strength. The results indicated that the new composite coagulant exhibited better coagulation performance than PFAC for removing turbidity and dissolved organic matter. For the composite coagulant, the predominant coagulation mechanisms were bridge formation and charge neutralization. The floes strength decreased as the shear rate increased.
