Intensified Denitrification by Adding Organic Carbon in Subsurface Wastewater Infiltration System

Three subsurface wastewater infiltration systems filled with matrix and carbon source in the soil were established. The systems were fed with rural sewage at a hydraulic load of 6.5cm/d with the carbon-nitrogen ratio of 2?8 for over 10 weeks, and the effluent TN concentration were 15mg/L,1 Omg/L and 2mg/L,respectively.The same removal performance of TN was obtained at the hydraulic load of 13cm/d for 12 weeks,of which the carbon-nitrogen ratios were above 3.TN removal efficiency did not decrease with the increase of hydraulic load. The systems operated at a hydraulic load of 20 cm/d with continuously low carbon-nitrogen ratios, and the results showed that the amendment of carbon source in the soil could enhance the TN removal efficiency with the effluent TN concentration of below 5mg/L.But the elimination of COD and NH4-N during the operation period was not influenced by the increasing of carbon-nitrogen ratios. It suggested that the amendment of carbon source in the soil could greatly improve TN removal efficiency.
