Effects of the Properties of Activated Sludge Mixed Liquor on Membrane Fouling in Submerged Membrane Bioreactor with Online Ultrasonic

Membrane fouling is one of the major obstacles for further application of submerged membrane bioreactors (SMBRs).A bi-frequency on-line ultrasound of 25 kHz and 50 kHz was applied to a lab-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating synthetic domestic wastewater. This study focused on the properties of activated sludge mixed liquor in submerged bioreactors with and without online ultrasonic.By comparing the mixture performance in two kinds of bioreactors, the effects of online ultrasonic on membrane fouling were also investigated. The transmembrane pressure (TMP),which can be used as an indicator of membrane fouling, was monitored.Over the course of the experiment,TMP increased more slowly in the MBR system fitted with ultrasound compared to that without suggesting that on-line ultrasound mitigated membrane fouling.Changes in viscosity, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS),soluble microbial products (SMP),and particle size of sludge granule, etc.were also monitored in a system fitted with ultrasound and one without (the control).Overall, online ultrasonic can effectively control membrane fouling, reduce the membrane fouling rate, prolong membrane cleaning cycle.
