Identification the Changes of Activated Sludge Characteristics Affecting the inner Supporting Composite Membrane Fouling in SMBR System

According the changes of activated sludge characteristics in SMBR system, this paper examines the effect of activated sludge properties such as sludge volume index (SVI),extracellular polymeric substances (EPS),sludge dynamic viscosity(|x),particle size distribution(PSD) and sludge supernatant on membrane fouling.Protein and carbohydrate was the main membrane foultants through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis. The results showed that when sludge disintegrated and filamentous bacteria excessive bred, the permeability and cleaning period of membrane were significantly decreased and shortened, the EPS concentration was 2 times and 3 times than the normal sludge, the membrane fouling accelerated and the TMP grew rapidly as EPS concentration increased. With the viscosity increasing, the pollutants would adsorbed onto the membrane surface and caused membrane fouling. When sludge disintegrated and the sludge particles size less than 40 jxm, colloidal particles in sludge supernatant would adhered to membrane surface and formed gel layer more easily, leaded to membrane fouling and effected the membrane permeability. The study confirm that appropriate adding iron salt can control the EPS content and reduce the small particulate and colloidal in supernatant,it also can improve the membrane permeability and the filterability of sludge mixed liquor, and decrease membrane fouling.
