Ozone Oxidation for the Mitigation of Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by Secondary Wastewater Effluent Organic Matter

For better understanding the effect of ozone oxidation pretreatment on the fouling of ultrafiltration membrane by secondary wastewater effluent organic matters (EfDM),the interaction forces of membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant before and after pretreatment were investigated by atomic force microscopy with self-made membrane material probe and foulant-coated probe, respectively. Moreover, the EfDM fouling experiments were carried out with PVDF UF membrane before and after pretreatment. Results showed that the highest DOC and UV254 remove rate of EfDM were reached 19.4% and 42.4% respectively with ozone oxidation pre-treatment.And the membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant adhesion forces were reduced from 1.44mN/m and 0.88mN/m to 0.23mN/m and 0.38mN/m.It reveals that ozone oxidation pre-treatment of effluent organic matters can efficiently mitigate the membrane fouling. And the results can provide a microcosmic theory evidence for ozone pretreatment further application in wastewater treatment and reuse.
