Carbon Electrode Modified by Nano-MgO to Improve Performance of Capacitive Deionization

Activated carbon (AC) electrode modified by nano-MgO (MgO-AC) was fabricated by sol-gel method in order to improve the electro-absorption capacity of AC electrode. The surface and electrochemical properties of MgO-AC electrode were characterized by SEM analysis,BET test and cyclic voltammetry analysis respectively. The results show that rod-like nanometer MgO is loaded on the surface of AC electrode. The specific surface area of the MgO-AC electrode achieves the maxium of 1120 m2/g increasing 335 m2/g compared to that of AC electrode. The specific capacitance of carbon electrode modified by the mass concentration of 10% of MgO achieves the maxium of 89.8 Fg-1 increasing 20 Fg-1 compared to that of AC electrode. The adsorption experiments show that the salt removal efficiency of KC1 solution achieves the maxium of 70.1% increasing 40.1% compared to that of AC electrode under the conditions of the voltage of 1.5 V,plate area of 5 cmx5 cm,electrode spacing of 1 cm,flow rate of 20 ml/min and raw water conductance of 320 us/min.The rate of desalination could be maintained after several cycles, indicating that the MgO-AC electrode shows a good repeatability. This study gives a guide for AC electrode applied to capacitive deionization technology.
