Changes of Sludge Water Distribution after Sonication and Sonication-flocculation
Moisture distributions is the key parameter impacting the sludge dewaterability. The changes of water distribution in aerobic activated sludge were experimentally studied after sonication conditioning and sonication-flocculation co-conditioning were tested. The proportion of various forms of water in the conditioning sludge, and the final water content of sludge cake after centrifliging were measured. The results showed that both sonication conditioning and sonication-flocculation co-conditioning significantly changed the moisture distribution in the sludge.Almost all water in the raw sludge existed as free or interstitial water. After sonication for 5 min,the proportion of free water decreased from 77.63% to 49.59%; to the contrary, the interstitial water content improved from 21.49% up to 42.32%; and the bound water content also had a certain degree of rise. When combining sonication with flocculants, the sludge water distribution changed again.Flocculation significantly increased the free water content and decreased the interstitial water content. The changes of free water and interstitial water were in the opposite trend.PAM was the most effective chemical among PAM,PAC,and FeCl3.Sonication deteriorated the sludge dewaterability and chemical flocculation improved the sludge dewaterability.Free water content seems to be the most important factor determining the sludge dewaterability.
