Characteristics of Nitrous Oxide Emission in Partial Nitritation Process Treating High Ammonia Wastewater

A lab-scale SBR fed with synthetic high ammonia wastewater was operated under oxygen limited condition for partial nitritation. After 58 days operation, the ratio of ammonia to nitrite in effluent maintained between 1.00-1.25 and the partial nitritation has been successfully started up by increasing the influent ammonia concentration.Conversion of nitrogen andN20 emission during a single cycle was investigated.During a single cycle DO concentration maintained under 0.4 mg-L-1.NH4+-N concentration decreased from 410.46 mg.L-1to 257.26 mg-L-1,N02--N concentration increased from 162.90 mg-L-1 to 295.80 mg-L-1,N03--N concentration increased gradually from 27.01 mg -L-1 to 50.16 mg -L-1.The pH value increased from 7.94 to 8.01 and then returned to 7.96.Dissolved N20 generally maintain around 0.078 mg - L-1.The emission of N20 increaseing from 0.13 mg - L-1 to 1.13 mg-L-1 and down to 0.34 mg-L-1 then subsequently back up to 0.54 mg - L-1.The average rate of N20 emission was 0.84 mg·min1 in the initial stage,2.67 and 1.88 times more than the middle and the later stage respectively, the main reason is N20 accumulate in last settling phase.
