Effect of Nitrogen Loading Rate and External Carbon Source on Microbial Population and Activity in an SBR

We investigated the impact of nitrogen loading rate (NLR) and external carbon source on microbial population and activity developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) receiving the outflow from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) treating municipal wastewater. The SBR operated at NLRs of 0.13 kg/m3-d and 0.20 kg/m3-d.Fermented liquid produced from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW),acetic acid and fresh leachate produced from OFMSW were tested as external carbon sources. The increase of NLR enhanced the specific ammonium uptake rate (sAUR) from 2.04 to 7.22 mgN/gVSS-h.The denitrification rate and the anoxic/aerobic phosphorus removal rates were much higher when fermentation liquid was employed as external carbon source compared to acetic acid and fresh leachate.FISH quantified analysis was in accordance with the activity tests since the ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) increased with increasing NLR while the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) decreased. The application of fresh leachate instead of fermented liquid from OFMSW as carbon source decreased the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs).
