The Application of System Dynamics and TPB in Construction Waste Reduction Management:A Review

As Chinas urbanization accelerates, construction and demolition (C&D) waste has become a critical issue which restricts urban development.Nowadays it has been a hot topic how to manage C&D waste effectively and C&D waste reduction is considered as one of the most effective management strategies. In the context of construction waste reduction management, this paper reviews related literature. It is found that the construction waste reduction management is a complex and nonlinear system involving macro policy, reduction measures and stakeholders’ waste reduction behaviors. However, these issues were investigated separately without integrating them as a whole. To appreciate such a complex system comprehensively, system research methods e.g.system dynamics should be applied.Currently system dynamics model of construction waste reduction management did not cover the factors of stakeholders’ waste reduction behavior. In addition, other research shows that theory of planned behavior (TPB) could be used to describe stakeholders’ waste reduction behaviors.Based on literature review, this paper proposes that system dynamics and TPB should be integrated to study construction waste reduction management. The feasibility of this research approach is discussed.
