Evolution of Steels for Car Manufacturing:Mechanical Considerations

Due to regulations concerning emissions, weight of cars has to be reduced ; lighter materials (aluminium and organic materials) are challenging steel. The Iron and Steel industry has developed steels with very high properties. These grades are directly linked with the microstructural mechanisms allowing to reach such properties.Functionality requirements (energy absorption, passengers protection, parts of complex shape) imply their application fields.Stiffness of the Body-In-White being a key factor, limits exist due to the constancy of the Young Modulus. It is probably not useful to develop steels with Tensile Strengths higher than 2000MPa.Variability of the available《semi-products》 is also important: among them, rolled profiles are discussed.A more efficient use of steel is possible if dimensioning is taking into account the effect of forming, bake hardening,heterogeneity,fracture...Although performing steels are developed to maximize these effects, they are not always integrated in dimensioning which leads to an incomplete use of the potentialities of these steels.Considering steel, aluminium and organic materials, each material to 《copy》the developments of the others. The ability to be modeled is of prime importance for the introduction of a material in structural parts.
