Effect of Heat Treatment on Toughness and Fatigue Properties of Heavy Power Transmission Shafts Made of Mn-Cr-Ni-Mo Steel

The mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, impact energy, fracture appearance transition temperature (FATT) and fatigue life are mostly affected by heat treatment. These properties show some interdependence with regards to the mechanical properties of heavy forgings, made from 34CrNiMo6 alloy steel. The influence of the cooling intensity during hardening was investigated and the possibilities and limits of accelerating the cooling rate were studied. With the heat treatment of this type of steel special behaviour of the microstructure and grain size obtained as demonstrated. The experimental results showed that desired FATT can be achieved only with specific cooling intensity. To achieve the best combination of toughness and fatigue life effect of tempering temperature on material was also studied.Microstructure studies and fracture surface wear carried out by scanning electron microscopes.Fatigue tests under rotating bending fatigue testing machine was carried out to estimate the effect of tempering temperature on fatigue strength of 34CrNiMo6 steel.
