Statistical analysis of mesoscale eddies near the Luzon Strait

Mesoscale eddies near the Luzon Strait (LS) were statistically examined on he basis of results of a trustworthy Pacific basin-wide ROMS model from 1993 to 2007.On an average,of 14.6 eddies including 6.9 anti-cyclonic eddies (ACEs) were formed East of the LS (Zone E),and 12.9 eddies including 6.5 ACEs were generated West of the LS (Zone W) each year.Usually,ACEs had a larger radius and a faster travel speed than CEs both in Zone E and in Zone W.Both anti-cyclonic and yclonic eddies formed in Zone E had a smaller radius,a shorter lifetime,a shorter travel distance, but a faster travel speed, compared with the ones originated in Zone W.Most eddies moved westward and were limited in the waters with depth larger than 1000 m.Eddies moving westward in Zone E either faded away or turned northeastward when they were close to the Kuroshio near the LS.Only two (one ACE and the other CE) of them passed through the LS and went into the SCS.Southwest of Taiwan (Zone W1) was distinctly a hotbed for generating ACEs,and northwest of Luzon (Zone W2) was a favorable place for the generation of CEs.In winter,ACEs dominated Zone W1 while CEs dominated Zone W2.In winter,ACEs dominated Zone W1 while CEs dominated Zone W2.In summer,a few of eddies were generated in Zone W1.
