Lateral saltwater intrusion in the North Channel of Changjiang Estuary
In this study, based on the in situ observation and numerical modeling,we have found and discussed a new type of saltwater intrusion in the Changjiang Estuary, dynamics of which are different from the traditional ones. This new saline water source enters a major outlet of Changjiang Estuary,i.e.,the North Channel, through a recent-developed small side-outlet.As there is an important freshwater reservoir located in the North Channel, this new intrusion could throw deep impacts on the freshwater usages of the nearby regions. From the modeling simulation in associated with the flux decomposing method,we have identified that this lateral saltwater intrusion is mainly developing during the middle tide after the neap tide, due to the Lagrangian and tidal pumping transports of the salt mass.
