Physical-chemical controls on summertime phytoplankton distribution off the Changjiang Estuary,East China Sea

  We investigated the phytoplankton distribution in relation to physical-chemical forcing at the Changjiang Estuary (CE) and its adjacent continental shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) in June and August 2009.Both in two cruises,the diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated in phytoplankton community,especially at eutrophic inshore waters which influenced by the coastal current and Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW).In June,because the CDW plume turned northeastward and the Subei Coastal Current impact,the algae bloomed at the north of CE.However,in August,two low-salinity tongues caused by enhanced CDW were narrow to extend eastward and southward,result in high algal abundance at the Zhejiang coast and east of the CE around the front.Meanwhile,high densities of cyanobacteria and haptophytes were found in oligoltrophic open sea,where controlled by the Taiwan Warm Current and Kuroshio.Due to upwelling of the subsurface Kuroshio (so-called Zhejiang Coastal Upwelling),high cyanobacteria density represented in Zhejiang offshore waters.The abundance maximum (AM) commonly occurred at surface in inshore waters,while at subsurface (5?10 m) in offshore area.Particularly in August,the AM layer even presented at 10?30 m depth with the thermocline aggravation.Based on the cluster analysis and circulation patterns,spatio-temporal variation in algal assemblage intensively related to the hydrological and chemical properties.Therefore,we conclude that physical-chemical controls on summertime phytoplankton distribution off the Changjiang Estuary.
