A model study of Luzon Cold Eddy in the northern South China Sea

A global variable-grid ocean circulation model MITgcm is employed to study Luzon Cold Eddy (LCE) in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and its relation to the Kuroshio intrusion. The vertical structure and properties of the LCE are studied, and the impact of the Kuroshio intrusion on the LCE is also discussed. In winter, the LCE can extend down to more than 1000m with a vertical tilted central axis. The center position of the LCE is heterogeneous at different depths. There is a significant difference between the lifetime of the LCE at depth above and below 350m.The local wind stress curl west of the Luzon Island plays an important role on the generation of the LCE.The Kuroshio intrusion can also induce positive relative vorticities west of Luzon to intensify the LCE,make the LCE larger with a longer duration, and push the LCE more northeastward.
