Reconstruct Storm-affected Current Field by Acoustic Tomography at Typhoon Pabuk

  In recent years,the applications of mid-scale or small-scale ocean acoustic tomography at coastal and marginal sea areas have received much attention.Since the shipborne observation at severe weather,such as typhoon,is hard and dangerous,OAT is a good non-invasion monitor method by placing acoustical stations outside the high sea state research areas to prevent damage.In this study,computer simulations of OAT for the 2-D horizontal current field which is influenced by severe tropical storm Pabuk(No.0707) are implemented.Two OAT methods including direct grid-based reciprocal transmission method and Fourier series expanded stream function method are investigated for the 2-D horizontal storm affected current field obtained from OSMAR HF radar during storm Pabuk in 2007(from 22.85o-24oN and 118o-119.15oE in Taiwan Strait).The stream function as a commonly used method is used to reconstruct 2-D horizontal current field by expanding into a Fourier series.The results revealed that the obvious vertical direction current affected by the strong storm makes the stream function invalid and reconstruct error significant.However,the direct grid-based reciprocal transmission method without the assumption of fluid incompressibility can reconstruct the current field at 0.05o high spatial resolution and with high accuracy.The correlation coefficient between original and reconstructed data is higher than 0.8.The study shows the potential application of OAT in storm-affected current observations.
