Impact of the Kuroshio on the Nonlinear Internal Waves in the South China Sea

The KdV equation and the MITgcm are employed to study the impact of the Kuroshio on the properties of nonlinear internal waves in the South China Sea.According to the model results, the westward shoaling of thermocline due to the Kuroshio suppresses the nonlinear evolution of internal tides in the east of Luzon Strait, causing asymmetric appearance of internal solitary waves between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is the westward inflow superimposed by the Kuroshio intrusion that reduces the amplitude of internal tides in the South China Sea,causing the weakening or absence of internal solitary waves.Winter stratification cannot account for the significant reduction of nonlinear internal waves, because the amplitude growth of internal tides due to increased thermocline tilting counteracts the reduced nonlinearity caused by thermocline deepening.
