Seasonal effects on internal tides in the East/Japan Sea

  Analyses of 2-year-long real-time ocean forecasting system outputs operated by Kyushu University reveal a remarkable seasonal change of semi-diurnal internal tides in the East/Japan Sea.Energetic semi-diurnal internal tides are generated around the northern mouth of Korea Strait where the continental shelf slope exists and the barotropic tides meet the sudden depth change nearly normally.The simulated amplitude and phase of semi-diurnal internal tides agree well with two time series of 25-hour CTD castings in hourly interval obtained during spring and neap tidal periods on the continental shelf slope.Converted energy from barotropic to baroclinic (internal) tides shows a significant seasonal signal due to stratification changes near the internal tide generation region.Generated internal tide energy travels far to the northern part of the East/Japan Sea during summer but not during winter.Propagating distance of internal tide energy appears to be associated with not only its generation intensity but also its wavelength.Longer (shorter) wavelength during summer (winter) makes internal tide energy dissipates less (more).Internal tides can contribute ocean mixing through its breaking in far field as well as near field.Our result provides an example implying that spatio-temporal variation of internal-tide-induced mixing due to the seasonality of its generation,propagation,and dissipation should be considered to simulate more realistic water mass and circulation not only in the East/Japan Sea but also in open oceans.
