Climate variability and its influence on fisheries in Korea waters

The regime shift,a rapid change from cold to warm in the Korea waters occurred in the late 1980s.On the other hand, the regime shift changing from warm to cold in late 1990s was shown only in the West and the South Sea.Siberian High Pressure Index (SHI) and East Asian Winter Monsoon Index (EAWMI) have a negative correlation with water temperature, and in case of AOI,it has a positive correlation with water temperature.Major fisheries resources in Korean waters responded to regime shift in late 1980s.Catches of warm water species such as squid increased.Conversely, cold water species such as pollock, croaker, herring, sandfish and cod decreased in after late 1980s.In case of the late 1990s regime shift, the species which spawning ground were located in the West and the South Sea responded to abrupt change. The major commercial species responded strongly to change in water temperature in their spawning ground.
