Cross shelf transport of terrestrial material in the marginal seas of China:implicated by the distribution pattern of dissolved Al

  Aluminum (Al) is one of the key parameters of GEOTRACES,which can be used as the tracer of terrestrial input from river and/or atmospheric deposition.The distribution of dissolved Al across the continental shelf in the East China Sea (ECS) shelf was examined in the spring of 2011 to estimate the potential of these waters as a source of Al to the western Pacific.Al profiles obtained in coastal,shelf and shelf edge waters demonstrate decreasing concentrations of Al with distance from the coast.The distribution of dissolved Al shows the impact of riverine input along the coastal area and also the intrusion of Kuroshio waters along the continental shelf.Along the transect from the northeast of Taiwan to the eastern end of the PN section which follows the flow axis of Kuroshio,the concentration of dissolved Al in the top 100 m layer increases northwards which indicates the contributions from continent terrestrial material.The concentrations of dissolved Al in the near bottom layer along Zhe-Min coast were 89(7 nM.An Al plume originated from the near bottom layer along Zhe-Min coast and transported eastward first and then northeastward to the shelf edge along the isopycnal surface was detected,although attenuated ~80%,strongly suggesting cross-shelf transport in the subsurface water over the continental shelf.This suggested transport passage of dissolved Al,an useful tracer for terrestrial material,may also indicate the cross-shelf transport of other macro and micro nutrients to the oligotrophic Pacific.
