Assessment of Phosphorus source in the East China Sea shelf:using δ18O of dissolved inorganic phosphate as a tracer

The East China Sea (ECS) continental shelf is one of the largest shelves in the world.Due to the increase of nutrient concentrations,red-tide and hypoxia have been frequently observed. In the ECS,it has been proved that the primary production is regulated by the availability of phosphate. The ECS receives a rich supply of phosphorus from the Changjiang River and from the Kuroshio Current.Although the phosphorus budget on the ECS shelf has been calculated, the source of phosphorus and the importance of each source in the ECS,especially the ECS outer shelf are not clear. With the development of the method for the analysis of δ18O of phosphate (δ18OP),δ18OP has been used to study the marine phosphorus cycle in the water column and marine sediments. On ECS outer shelf, the possible P sources are Changjiang diluted water,Kuroshio Current and Taiwan Warm Current and sediment pore-water.Concentration and δ18OP value of each end-member can be measured, and can be used as a tracer to track the phosphorus source.
