Effect of Moderate Hypoxia on Macrobenthic Community Structure in the Yangtze River Estuary

We conducted four survey cruises in the Yangtze River Estuary to evaluate the effect of hypoxia on the structure of the macrozoobenthic community. The results show that species number, abundance and biomass of polychaetes and mollusks in the hypoxic area are significantly higher than in the non-hypoxic area.Polychaetes and mollusks account for a higher proportion of the community in the hypoxic area than in the non-hypoxic area, while crustaceans account for a lower proportion in the hypoxic area than in the non-hypoxic area.SIMPER analysis shows a great difference in the characterizing species of the hypoxic area and those of the non-hypoxic area. The results indicate that short-term moderate hypoxia may not cause a decrease of macrozoobenthos, but it may result in the reestablishment of the community.
