Decadal variability of diatom productivity over the East China Sea Shelf

Multiple proxies, including biogenic silica,Ba,Zn (i.e.bSiO2,Baex and Znex),and authigenic uranium (i.e.Uex),were determined in a sediment core to examine the decadal variability of diatom productivity over the East China Sea (ECS) Shelf. The contents of bSiO2 showed periodicities of 18 to 25 years during the past 200 years. The decadal variability of Baex,Znex and Uex fairly match the temporal pattern of bSiO2 though their tracking mechanism are very different, strongly supporting the decadal oscillation of diatom productivity in the ECS.Overall, the bSiO2 contents increased from 1850s to 1960s,however it decreased after 1960s,corresponding to the descended riverine silicate resulted from anthropogenic activities. These results suggested that the East China Sea has been affected by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in a manner similar to adjacent western North Pacific, but anthropogenic activities are changing its ecosystem to a scenario.
