The Influence of Polysaccharides from Lentinula edodes Mushroom on The Food Intake and Body Weight of Drosophila melanogaster
Shiitake mushroom Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler is one of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms in the world and it is a well studied source of nutrients and biologically active compounds. This paper studied the influence of the dietary supplement of the polysaccharides contained in hot water extracts of the shiitake mushroom on food intake, body weight, life span and locomotive activity of fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.Shiitake extracts added to the drosophila feeding substrate at the concentration of 0.03%-0.15% didnt influence food intake and body weight of the flies, but they increased the life span of male flies and locomotive activity of female flies. This prompted that the observed anti-aging effects of the shiitake extracts in drosophila are not the result of diet restriction.Drosophila is a suitable model organism for the research on the molecular basis of the anti-aging effect of the shiitake mushroom extracts.
